Ranch Gelding Stakes & Sale

Horsemen Compete for over $11,000 with "America's Premier Ranch Gelding Sale" following.

What is a stakes?

Formally, a stakes is a competition offering a prize to the winner. In San Antonio, it's the competition where horsemen demonstrate their ranch gelding's ability to handle, box and fence cattle, and rope cattle. And it is followed by America's Premier Ranch Gelding Sale.

The Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale is the perfect buying opportunity. These geldings are screened by Segraves and Associates and you'll get to watch them perform before you make your purchase.

The Ranch Rodeo committee does not produce the Ranch Gelding Stakes and Sale.

But, we know a good show when we see one.

All geldings entered in the show and sale will be judged on their ability to perform certain tasks routinely associated with ranch work. This competition will be carried out before an audience of prospective buyers making their selections for the auction, which immediately follows the competition and awards.

Awards will consist of a total estimated purse of approximately $11,400, including cash and prizes dispersed from 1st through 8th places.

Why is this such a great buying opportunity?

These geldings are pre-screened before they ever get to San Antonio. Videos are presented to Segraves and Associates who produce the sale. Based upon the videos, ideal ranch geldings are selected for the Stakes & Sale. Then, you get to watch them compete the same day that they sale. Be sure to attend the competition. Watch the horses you are considering. In addition to watching them compete, watch how they handle waiting out back, being around people, and preparing for the event.

Also, many of these horses have additional training other than what it takes to be effective on the ranch. Ask the trainer about your interests. Can they rein on the horse? Rope calves, Team rope, Cut, Team Pen... etc.
